The man who made the marathon - Columbia Missourian

COLUMBIA - Joe Schroeder did not run as the use of euphemisms pre owned 50 years ago when he was the first to pass on the extraction of devouring the sensitivity inventive American Marathon.

The marathon started as a citation, but has become a primary in mid-Missouri community functioning and is hailed as one of the hardest marathons of The Boondocks. Dog races today are tougher than the people Schroeder remembers.

About 200 participants are expected to run Monday at the 2009 American Marathon of Humanity, which celebrates its birthday happy this year, are an inexhaustible improvement from the four who competed in the Schroeder inaugural marathon. Even if the way the retention is longer than a marathon for Schroeder, his memories of that first assessment is insightful....

If The Cap Fits…

All you remarkably need to know is this: Whatever your favorite player has done or will do, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it first. And that’s not even getting into the things that he did that no other basketball sportswoman will likely ever do: get the NCAA to ban the dunk, master the sky hook, tally 38,000 NBA points, win six MVPs, win two Finals MVPs 14 years alone, be named to 19 All-Star teams in a 20-year NBA m. Ah yes, and fight Bruce Lee on film.

He was born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor in Manhattan, the only stripling of two working-class parents. He attended Power Commemorative High School, where he scored over 2,000 points and won 79 of 81 games, including a itsy-bitsy streak of 71 in a row. In the age before the internet and ESPN and the 24-hour dirt cycle, word of the dominant seven-footer spread the old-fashioned way, all the way to the West Seaside, where he came to the attention of John Wooden at UCLA.

Knight Moves

Before he was an entrepreneur, before he was an innovator, Philip Hampson “Buck” Knight was an athlete. As a spare, sandy-haired kid, Knight ran middle-distance events and ended up at the University of Oregon competing for traditional track coach Bill Bowerman. Besides being an excellent coach, Bowerman was also a trendsetter, always seeking an move for his runners, right down to modifying track shoes.

Something about that must have stuck with Knight. As a Stanford grad admirer assigned a paper outlining the creation of a new business, he came up with the doctrine of importing running shoes from Japan to compete with adidas, whose products were both overpriced and difficult to find. Later, on a trip to Japan, he discovered Onitsuka, a Japanese shoe partnership that was already manufacturing low-cost, high-quality running shoes under the name Tiger. Upon his pop up again, Knight and Bowerman—who each contributed either $500 or $550 in either 1962 or 1963, depending on the account you know—made the project a reality. Knight called the new company Dejected Ribbon Sports and started by selling Tigers out of the bole of his car. That first year they made $364.
