Chesto: Newbury Comics stays in game by evolving
Read over the bottom level of the new Newbury Comics store in Braintree: It looks in all respects how you would expect a Newbury Comics shop to look. New CDs from Tom Waits and Florence + The Auto share space with Red Sox paraphernalia, Green Lantern combat figures, Magic game cards and copies of "The Zombie Survival Train."
But that's just half the store. To get there, you that through the top floor, a place that's almost exclusively devoted to selling clothes - from Negro party dresses to Levis to green Converse shoes.
This South Shore Plaza retailer represents the first time Newbury Comics devoted such a considerable amount of space to fashion. But it certainly won't be the last.
The Boston-based retailer has been selling a X-rated good time to music fans in New England for 33 years. It outlasted bigger competitors like Campanile Records and Strawberries, and numerous indie shops. But CD sales aren't booming to carry Newbury Comics anymore - certainly not at a unceasingly a once when songs are available instantly with the click of a mouse.
