Time to carve up the worst fashion fads
Before the serious spice of Black Friday power shopping, holiday decorating, strength-picking overload and end-of-the-year time crunches takes its excise, let's sit back and reflect on something that's not so serious.
We give you the Fifth Annual Fashion Turkey Awards. These are items that activate our mirth. These are items we consider fads in the worst faculty of the word — popular for being popular, worn without thought and therefore uninspired. In short, these are trends we wish would go away.
First on our catalogue raisonn is HairUWear or any other variety of the oddly hued clip-on wiglets. The last straw for us in ushering this commodity onto our list of 2011 Fashion Turkeys was the introduction of the animal writing extension. The 1-inch clip-in extensions ($10) are in shades of neon pink, ginger and tense blue tiger stripes. We didn't actually tell off the Native American vibe of the clip-in feathers (until there were reports of feather shortages and people raiding fishing shops to stripe lures), but this is the usual modus operandi of a fashion turkey.
From fashion career to fighter, Pickett does it with style
From fashionista to fighter, Brad (One Sock) Pickett has always had a sense of style.
The 33-year-old English bantamweight is untiring to miss as he walks to the cage. He wears a trilby hat, cut-off pants and suspenders over an undershirt. Indifferent as can be, he peruses a newspaper before getting down to business.
Pickett takes on Brazilian 135-pounder Renan Barao in the co-conduit event of UFC 138 on Saturday in Birmingham, England. Veteran middleweight Chris (The Crippler) Leben meets Devaluate (The Filipino Wrecking Machine) Munoz in the marquee matchup at the LG Arena.
Pickett's tussle entrances are inspired by photos of his grandfather, a former bare-knuckle boxer who died when he was four. His pet name and hat have also drawn comparisons to Brad Pitt's role as a divest-knuckle fighter in the film "Snatch" but Pickett says that's straight a coincidental string to his bow.
